Actually, politics is the way to go. We send out HOW much to other countries? And we have people going to bed hungry. Children who are homeless right along with their parents. But our money is spent on war. On helping other countries while people right here, many of them young, are affected by poverty.
And as much as people don't like to hear it, illegal immigrants use fake papers to drain our resources to help those who are poverty stricken.

Get involved in our government processes. Contact your local reps and urge them to use money to help the people right here. Education reforms would be great. Have you seen some of the posts on here? The fact that our teenages cannot in many cases write something that other people can just read and understand. It must be deciphered. Before everyone jumps on me, students especially, I didn't say all students. I said in many cases. Education leads to better jobs. Let's face it, some people are not ever going to have high paying jobs because they really are not smart enough to get fancy degrees.
Put pressure on your reps to make changes that help those here, not others overseas. Stop illegals draining our systems.
What can you do on the local level? I heard about a group that goes shopping with coupons on double/triple days, and they get tons of food for very little to donate to pantries. Have food drives. Volunteer to tutor those who need help with their education. Until there are much stricter guidelines and kids are not passed from grade to grade to fall farther and farther year by year, these kids need help.
Want to really know your stuff? What are you great at in school that you could teach? If you teach, you best know your stuff. I used to ask Mom for help on my algebra, and in the process of telling her what I didn't "get" I explained it to myself and needed no help. Well, teach skills at a homeless shelter. Get your parents involved, get them to help out as well. Use the resources you have, time and education, and maybe a bit of money, and help out. You will feel great, it will look wonderful on your resume, and it will improve things right here at home.
Get a bunch of students behind you, using this very reasoning. Get involved in groups. The more the better.
And though it might not make the poor less poor, when those clothes go out of style, don't toss them, or put them in the garage, take them to homeless shelters, and for females domestic violence shelters. Most women who end up single mothers are under the poverty level. Except those who have resources and some of those don't go to shelters. Many who go that route need a place to be to get on their feet.
Donate books you don't want to read again to shelters, any educational programs in your area that help disadvantaged kids ( just make sure they are appropriate for kids to read) to encourage reading. You cannot learn without the ability to read and understand what you are reading. Do the same with siblings books as well, and clothing.
College students can become Big Brothers or Big Sisters, and hopefully be a good influence to the younger set. Do it in groups, get a few together and you and the kids can do things as a group.
When you start working, find worthy organizations and donate what you can, when you can. Every little bit helps out. And most importantly, keep caring, as you obviously do now.

Hate to tell ya, dude. We just took a giant step backwards. By granting amnesty to 20 (not 12) million illegals, we have just created a permanent group of second class citizens. Recall how long it took the blacks to get even a small share of their rights? There were camps of them in the south without so much as electricity or running water! Imagine a batch of these people that don't even have the ability to vote! At least the blacks could do that and eventually "rise above". No, my friend our govt has just turned us down the road of third world nation status. Think this legislation will slow down the tide of poor people sneaking into our country? Think a guest worker won't get his girlfriend pregnant as soon as he can, thus being related to an American citizen, so he can STAY? Nope. We're screwed. We'll have to pay for this mess too. You and me in the form of taxes. We have just taken on more than three times the population of Sierra Leone, the poorest nation on the planet. You haven't even begun to see poverty in the US until now.

Poverty is the unintended results/consequences of our choices/decisions. It is possible to be born in poverty and move up the socio-economic scale. I am living proof. I clearly remember gettig my first pair of shoes. I was five and it was fall. School was starting. I embarrassed my mother because I complained to the salesman that they hurt my feet. My first visit to the dentist came when the state school set up a tent on the front lawn of the elementary school.
Three years ago, my wife and I opened a small dog grooming business. This year, our profit margin is going to be six figures.
Studying hard and doing well in school will not guaranty you a good job with lots of money, but failing to pay attention, and not caring about your grades or school work will most assuredly lead you into a life of poverty.

End the abuse of social programs. Make people be accountable. Demand that they either move forward and put forth effort or not receive assistance. Make English the official language. Reign in unreasonable union demands.
