i think its good that you are interested and concerned about this issue. i would recommend you look into science sites for info. perhaps try livescience.com or google your question. they may not know if this year will be the hottest on record, but you can learn whats going on. alot of controversy over al gores movie An Inconvenient Truth, but i found it very informative and easy to understand and absorb and i also went to one of his lectures on the subject this year. good luck finding your answers and good luck to us all!!

You're going to get a lot of biased results here. Do your own independent research.

Even if 2007 is not the hottest year on record (say, 2006 was on average higher), it is not proof against global warming. The general trend is that the Earth is warming.

We have taken carbon from the ground and released it into the atmosphere. We are already seeing effects, such as the melting of ice caps. The disasters predicted are speculation, but as we won't really know if they are certain until it's too late, it seems we should heed the warnings and live cleaner.

You hit the nail on the head when you used the word "hype". There are people who exploit the ignorance of others and play on fears to provoke a reaction. Here is a short article which does a pretty good job of shooting down the "humans are destroying the Earth" myth.

If you want to keep up with the debate in the media, make a habit of visiting www.drudgereport.com. There are stories about global warming almost everyday. Those stories may be a good jumping off point for you to do some of your own research as well.

Despite everything said above, we won't know until the summer is over if it is the hottest ever recorded so far (2008 could be worse).

It also depends on what criteria you are analyzing. Are you going to use the global average temperature (averaging all weather station recordings daily)? If so, what are you going to do with the Southern Hemisphere?. If you are going to use just the US, then you need to consider that some areas might experience exceptionally low temperatures this year and that your data will be off. If you are just looking for the hottest summer for a particular area, then your guess is as good as mine until we get the data.

We just experienced 38 degrees here in Philippines!!!
I was playing soccer that time. Conveniently, I put on SPF 30 on my skin, but my skin still burned. And we consume a lot of water here. This is definitely the hottest.
