Question 1
p² - 5p - 24 = 0
(p - 8).(p + 3) = 0
p = 8 , p = - 3
Question 2
6z² + 17z + 5 = 0
(3z + 1).(2z + 5) = 0
z = - 1/3, z = - 5/2
Question 3
x² - 8x - 48 = 0
(x - 12).(x + 4) = 0
x = 12 , x = - 4

p^2=5p+24 (-5p -24)
p^2-5p-24=0 (now factorise)
=(p-8)(p+3)=0
p=8 or p=-3 (2 answers)

b)not 100%

c)x^2/12 - 2x/3 - 4 = 0 (multiply each term by 12 remove fractions)
=x^2 - 4(2x) - 48 = 0
x^2-8x-48=0 (factorise again like a)
(x-12)(x+4)
x=12 or x=-4

p = -3 or 8

z = -5/2 or -1/3

x = -4 or 12

All this is done moving all the variables to one side, setting it equal to 0, and then using the quadratic formula, which is

(-b +OR- (SQRT(b^2-4ac)))/2a

To see the better looking version just type in quadratic formula to wikipedia
