VPN or Virtual Private Network is a secure connection between two network devices that runs over a non-secure public network, like the internet. The secure connection depends on encryption technology for security, which scrambles the data to anyone without the encryption key.

Virtual Private Network

From an online Dictionary:
A virtual private network (VPN) is a private data network that makes use of the public telecommunication infrastructure, maintaining privacy through the use of a tunneling protocol and security procedures. The idea of the VPN is to give the company the same capabilities at much lower cost by using the shared public infrastructure rather than a private one.

VPN stands for virtual private network. To put it is layman's terms, it is a hole through the internet wherein two computers can see each other, but no other computer can see in.

Kind of a clumsy way to explain it. Hope this helps.

Much more safer.
If it is with a router - some linksys models for example it means much more security - it is encrypted in a tunnel so that others cannot see or read the data.
Banks use vpn security for greater security
