Most older cars in pristine condition command a higher price than ones that have had parts or assemblies like engine, trans or axles replaced. A pristine car is closer to what came off the factory floor and collectors covet them more than one that has different parts than it originally came with.. A numbers matching car means that all the stamping codes of the various major parts of the car are correct and match that car by VIN number or model, etc. Some unscrupulous people go to great lengths to forge these numbers and thus get more money for a non-matching car than they normally would.

It means that the car is not a clone (phony or Frankenvehicle, created from other parts). It means that all serial numbers are correct and match the vehicle's Build code (the numbers assigned to the vehicle when it was built). Some people balk at replacing a dead battery with a Sears Diehard; they'd rather buy a factory replacement so the numbers match. That's a tad extreme, but it gives you an idea of how most antique and collector car owners value their possessions.

If you're simply looking for an affordable old car and you find one advertising that "numbers all match," it means this is a collector's car and the price may not be very affordable because collectors and enthusiasts are willing to pay good money for cars with all the original parts.

It means that all replacement parts match the original on the car when new.
In other words, if a part has gone bad, it must be replaced by one that came on the vehicle when new.

This only matters if youre a collector nut or want to resell it later for alot more.

I don't care because I buy classics to drive daily, but if you're big on the collector scene, you want matching numbers.
