We have found that acne in general responds well to a home remedy taught to me by a friend from Guatemala:
At night before bed, pour about a Tbsp of sugar into the palm of your hand and add just enough lemon juice to make a paste. Massage the paste in a circular motion (not too hard, you don't want to abrade the skin!) over the affected areas to slightly exfoliate. Then, let the paste sit for about 30 seconds, rinse off and pat dry. Do this each night. For my son's very oily and football/baseball-sweat aggravated acne we switch the sugar to salt.
I can honestly tell you that he notices improvement the very first morning when he does this.
Hope this helps! At least it's not expensive to try : )

I was in your situation not too long ago, and I also tried proactive, but it did not work for me. The best answer I can give you is to see a dermatologist, and he or she will most likely prescribe amoxicillin which is just a basic bacteria killer for your body. It worked for me so far and I also use Clean and Clear acne stuff just for reassurance for a touch up.

When you have an active breakout...do not scrub your skin. It only causes the bacteria to spread making the acne worse.
If you're cleaning you face properly you should see a difference..but sometimes it may be the things we dont think about. For example, telephones are dirty and have tons of bacteria, change your pillowcases for often, etc.

you can see a dermatologist if it's severe or check out http://www.acne.org
I did try proactiv & it only worked for me for about a year then it quit working. Also, hormonal birth control really helped my acne a lot. Right now I'm using mario badescu skin care & it's working pretty well.

Don't over wash and use moisturizer. Moisturizing keeps your skin from overreacting to dry skin from washing. Proactiv is very harsh and can be doing more damage then good. Try Clinques 7 day rinse off scrub and a cleanser that is clear and oil free.

Well, I know that most people say the scrubs work but they dont but the pre-moist pad things with the astengint work the best if you apply them once in the morning and once before bed and wash your face with warm water afterwards

See your doctor or a dermatologist. For my acne, prescription drugs worked the best.
