u know how a computer can have an resulution of 1024 x 1048 and an hdtv has 480i 720p ext. can anybody tell me or give me a website that compares both like 1024 x 1048= 480i like that thanks.

There is no standard resolution of 1024 by 1048.

1024 by 768 is a standard.

1680 by 1050, and 1920 by 1050 are both standards.


TV resolutions are given by the number of lines of video, and then whether it is Interlaced or Progressive.

So 480i is XXX by 480, with an interlaced scan.

the XXX will change depending on the aspect ratio. Full frame ('normal 4:3 aspect ratio) would be 640 by 480. Widescreen would be 848 by 480, or 853 by 480.

Interlacing is a way to get higher field rates for a limited bandwidth. In an interlaced signal all the odd numbered lines are sent, then all the even numbered lines.

The field rate is 60 Hz, so you tend not to notice your CRT based TV flickering, but the frame rate is 30 Hz, so the bandwidth required for the signal is less.

For progressive scan, each line is sent after the one before, top to bottom, then back to top to start again. Progressive scan needs more bandwidth, but produces a better picture.



Comparing to a PC monitor. The HD mode is equivalent to the second number in the resolution. So 720p is similar to 1024 by 768 (full frame) or 1360 by 768 (widescreen)

All PC monitors are progressive scan.
