I have a 04 civic LX, bought it new, now has 280,000 miles on it (yes I drive alot) anyhow it's started overheating recently, strangely though. It only heats up when I'm stopped, and is fine at 20+ miles an hour, even 110mph, didn't make it warm. I know what you're thinking...it's the fans, but they both come on when they should, they just can't keep up with the heat. I haven't tried the thermo yet, but I don't think it could be the thermostat, I was thinking water pump, but I can't check it for leaks because it's encased in a housing and run by the timing belt. I just don't want to go through the trouble of replacing the t-belt and water pump if that's not the prob. any help would be appreciated, I haven't got a lot of money so a mechanic is hard to come by:)

The fans come on before the temp gauge gets halfway (always has), and they stay on until the temp drops back to that point, and Jake, Thanks for assuming I don't know how to maintain my vehicle, "beats me" was very helpful info.

i own a shop, and i wouldn't rule the thermostat out on it,and that's a lot cheaper on that one than a water pump,id at least try a new thermostat in it,and then if that doesn't make any difference in it at all,id look at the radiator, the bottom will get a little stopped up,and cause them to do exactly like yours is doing, and one last thing,i have seen water pumps wear the fins on them almost completely out,and it wont let it circulate the water real good, and this makes them heat up a little, and like you said ,as long as your moving, its alright, you have several things to check, you have to check things so you can rule them out, other wise you,ll never find the problem with it,good luck i hope this helps.

Here are a few more possibilities. Can you look down into the radiator and see the fluid circulating? If so, then your water pump is fine. Hoses can look fine on the outside and be collapsing internally at low speeds so check that too. Does your radiator cap hold pressure? Is there damage to the fan shroud? If all of these check out ok try checking the actual coolant temp with a thermometer. If it's not really overheating, then you need a new temp sensor. I think an internally collapsed hose is the most likely problem. If the car is fine at high speeds, then the radiator is not clogged and the water pump is working fine. One more possibility; Take it to a car wash and hose all the bugs, dirt, etc. off the front of the radiator and make sure the grill openings are unobstructed.

if you keep up with coolant and the fans arent bad than it may be your water pump, but i think it maybe the temperture switch that turns on your fans at the right point (when the engine is too hot)

Beats me, the timing belt, water pump, and coolant/thermostat only have 10,000 miles on them, right? They should if you do your maintainence right.

Plugged radiator, or worn water pump impeller blades.

Take your pick.........
