the sensor on the drivetrain for the mileage and speed has problaby just got unhooked or gone bad, its not that expensive you should take it into a auto shop

There's no reason to believe the gauge broke. Speedometer cables can break and often enough that you can find one at any auto parts store. They're pretty cheap too.

Gm has had a problem with the instrument clusters, on most all vehicles from 98-06. Things just quit working like the temp. guae, oil, guage and most of all the speedometer hand...it starts out irratic, then bounces, then just quits...GM had a recall on certain vehicles..check to see if your VIN# at the dealership is one of them...if not the only thing to do is to replace the instrument cluster..part cost around $400.00 and has to be ordered...I suggest you get a used one...go to car-parts.com and locate one...
