First indication was a bump, then minutes later it started reving like it was in neutral. fluid level is ok. no odors. engine runs good but there is a Engine light on. any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

May try a code reader. Some parts store do this for free, Auto-Zone is one. I not think ford makes good transmission in these cars though, I hope it something simple you can fix yourself.

I'm sorry to confirm this but your will need to have the Trans removed for repair or replaced. The engine light is on because the computer recognized the incorrect gear ratio, neutral feel. I have seen more than few with cracks in the direct clutch drum, that’s 3rd gear. You cheapest option may be to have it torn down to check cost of repair. If the fluid has no odor and the color is a bright red, that means the clutches have not been burnt.

dude my car just did the same thing!!!!!! its ur tranny mine did it a 3000 rpm's to it wouldnt shift in 3rd gear..... my bands broke in my tranny, i have a 2002 explorer i deffinetly would take it to the garage just to make sure, mine didnt smell and the fluids were good to!!! im tellin ya its the fords!!!! i hope i helped it not good to drive it eiether, is your overdrive light on too? or your check engine light? my o/d light came on then it started flashin, soo just be carefull ok

i guess it could be a sensor, i don't know which one. take it to a shop and have it checked out, autozone could read the codes and tell you what it is if you can get there. if thats not it, i'd say your tranny is slipping, you could try some lucas oil and see if that helps, its a lot cheaper than buying a new transmission.

That happened to me too, you will have to change your transmission.

DAMN TRANSMISSIONS..... I JUST CHANGED MINE, ON MY HONDA CIVIC, BECAUSE IT WAS ACTING LIKE IT WAS ON NEUTRAL, BUT IT JUST TURNS OUT THAT IT GOES BAD, YOU SHOULD CHANGE IT OR CHANGE YOUR CAR.....
