We're at work and we started talking about the beautiful women celebrities...angelina, halle, etc. All of a sudden my sup looks at me and says you're not suppose to be talking about this dyke! That really hurt my feelings because I'm not one and it came out of nowhere. I keep business at work and my personal life at home, so no I'm don't discuss who I'm sleeping with among my coworkers because its not professional. Him calling me that really hurt my heart I waited until I got home and cried but I just don't understand why I'm so upset I usually can brush jokes off but that really got to me. Advice?

whether you're a lesbian or not...your supervisor was way out of line! you should report him for harassment to your HR department. no supervisor/manager...whatever has any right to be verbally abusive like that! if your supervisor gets away with talking to you like this...he'll get away talking to others this way, too!

Whether or not you are a lesbian, that comment was inappropriate, and not in any way funny. I think you should say something to him privately and that he ows you an appology. It could be considered sexual harassment. If you tell him that you found his comment offensive and harassing and he says something like that in the future, you can then go to your HR department and file an official complaint. If you don't say something to him, then he has no way of knowing that you were offended, and he may repeat that sort of comment again.

first off, that can not happen. a co-worker is not allowed to talk to anyone like that. so if i were you i would go up to that person and jump all over them, i tend to be really really direct and not care who it is. if your not as direct then youi need to go to that person and tell them that you would like to discuss it as two adults and if they are unwilling to do so then take it up with their boss. if i'm not mistaken that has the makings of a lawsuit, no person in any company can make an employee feel out of place or overly stessed at work.
i'm sorry that that happend to you and i will you all the luck dealing with that small minded idiot

First off, regardless if you are lesbian or not, your boss has no right to talk to you are anyone in that manner. For no other reason he should be reported... period.

Secondly, your sexual preference, or anyones should not be commented on at work.

Your boss has a problem, and needs to be taken down a notch.

Well, for one thing, the word dyke, although used frequently to describe lesbians is kind of offensive.

What I suspect is the real issue is that your sup said something inappropriate to you in front of your co-workers and essencially pooped in your punch bowl to boot. You were having a nice friendly, totally innocuous conversation, and BAM your hit with your sups narrowminded, insensitive BS.

But you need to shake it off and if you have another conversation like this in the future - ignore him. He is obviously a small minded individual and you should feel nothing but pity for him.

you were hurt because you were sexually harassed. whether you are gay or not he did not have a right to say such a demeaning sexual thing to you he used the word dyke like it was the worst of the worst thing to be sexually and you were it. that is why it registered in your emotions so vividly. he is a pig

Report him for sexual harassment. What he said was way out of line. Bosses shouldn't talk to their employees like that.

That behavior is absolutely uncalled for...even if he was joking he knows better..You should contact his super, or if your not comfortable with that contact your HR(humanresources) dept. That is sexual harrasment!
It is socially acceptable for women to comment on other women's looks with out be called a lesbian. That's crazy. I'm sorry that happened to you..
Hey like my best friend says to me cheer up charlie lol :)

No one should have to go through what you just went through. In most places of employment, what he did would be considered a form of sexual harassment, no matter what your sexual orientation is.

I am surprised your fellow workers did not say something to him immediately.

I suggest you confront him and tell him you did not appreciate his comment.

Report him. That is a disrespectful slur and constitutes sexual harassment. That is in no way appropriate for the work environment.
