This is a list and is always saturated with the same names, which are guys who REALLY were the best and will probably never be topped so I'll name the guys always seen on this list, then who I Think are the best besides the obvious Masters of guitars :)
1. Robert Johnson (most music today wouldn't exist without him)
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Chuck Berry
4. B.B. King
5. Eric Clapton
1. Jonny Greenwood & Ed O'Brien (Radiohead)
2. Matthew Bellamy (Muse)
3. Omar Rodriguez (ATDI, Mars Volta)
4. Gustavo Cerati (Soda Stereo)
5. John 5 (Manson, Rob Zombie)

Can see I'm clearly in a minority here as people only seem to have time for guitarists doing the full on metal thing. Fair enough, but there are great and innovative guitarists outside the one genre.
Anyway;
1 Matt Bellamy
2 Johnnny Marr
3 John Squire
4 Jimi Hendrix
5 Graham Coxon

The thing that I think bizarre about this is that every time this question is posted, at least half the answers give five 'shredders' as their answers - heavy metal guitarists who may be amazing technically, but who have not a shred of soul, sensitivity or even basic creativity. As BB King (or was it Clapton) said: 'Most often it's the notes you DON't play that are the most important ones.' And indeed as someone once said of Mozart 'Too many notes, Mr Mozart.'.
So kudos to those who picked people like Stevie Ray Vaughan, not only as gifted as any shredder you care to put up, but smokingly soulful and bluesy... Ry Cooder, who loves the music he plays....
For the record the top 5 guitarists in my opinion are.
Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Dave Gedge (The Wedding Present) - not superb technically but awesome rhythm/lead playing which taught Cobain EVERYTHING.
Richard Thompson.
Chuck Prophet (Green On Red or solo)
Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead for experimenting with the boundaries of guitar/electronic fusion).
And not only did a guy mention the bass player in Metallica as one of his five, he also got Krist Novaselic in there, bass player with Nirvana... so he actually only managed to mention three actual guitar players in his picks!!!
