I need to verify my site.........help! This is what I have to do but don't know how?
I need to either upload an HTML file with a name that (Google) specifies, or add a META tag to my site's index file.

Sounds to me like you have submitted your website to Google for indexing.
Now Google requires verification to make sure that you are indeed the owner of the site.
Only the owner would be able to place such a tag in their website.
Did you design and upload your site?
If so it should be easy for you to do this.
Go back to Google and copy the Meta tag html code for your site.
Now go into your website via ftp or control panel at your webhost, find your public_html folder and open it, then find your index.html file which is your website main/home page.
You need to open this (index.html) file for editing.
Then in the very top section anywhere between the and tags place/paste your verify meta tag.
It will look like this:

Save and upload the new file and that should be it.
Go back to Google and click on the link to say that you have placed a meta tag verification.

You should submit your site to Google by using the following page. But do once only because if you do so many times, the Crawler think u r spamming and remove you from the search index.
