I want to build something that can dash across Otago Harbour, New Zealand, in any weather, at a speed of 25mph (40km/h), and use as little fuel as possible.
What should I buy/ build?
A catamaran with a 5HP diesel?
A surfboard with a 3HP outboard?
A wakeski with a 2HP outboard?
I am ready to receive your craziest suggestions.
Oh, btw.: Conservative ones are also welcome.
Cheers.

Try a "CHROME BABY MOON HUB CAP" off one "1958 CHEVY ROADSTER", mount securely and "PADDLE LIKE HELL".

p.s. for extra propulsion strap a 20hp out-board to your back.

Correction: make that a 25hp.

Well, I guess you could say speed and fuel are relative. If you want a fast little boat that will run with as small as a 10 hp outboard and far exceed your speed requirements, try this one: www.glen-l.com They have plans for many hydroplane style boats that actually ride on a cushion of air ( thus air entrapment) and the only part of the actual hull in the water producing drag are two small points on the ends of the sponsons, and the prop (thus 3 point) They are very economical and a blast to drive too!

Catamaran but remember when it comes to boats speed is money how fast you want to go depends on how much you are willing to spend!

Forget the water and get a Micro Light.

There's a page on Ultra Lights, that provides background theory and information from powered para-sail to ultra lights at, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultralight_aviation

Google, 'micro light aircraft' and it will lead you to several Micro Light Sites,
