"Why did the chicken cross the road?" is one of the oldest and most famous riddles still in use in the English language. The most common answer is "To get to the other side."
The earliest published form of the riddle as a joke can be found in an 1892 edition of Potter's American Monthly, which on page 319 gives the riddle in this form:
Why should not a chicken cross the road?
It would be a fowl proceeding.

Well........
The chicken at the time was running from a Pink Monkey...it was tryin to find a way to get away from him...after taking the plane, riding a boat, taking a taxi to Timbuktu, running across the Arabian Dessert, swimming across the Atlantic Ocean, getting a piggy back ride from a penguin across Antartica, driving a go-cart all the way up South America, jumping rope to Texas, teleporting himself to NASA,riding a space shuttle to Pluto and back...the Pink Monkey was able to keep up the whole time and the chicken was running out of ideas...he finally decided to cross the road and the Pink Monkey finally couldn't keep up cause he got hit by a car...after crossing the road he found an attractive girl chicken named Chick and they married and lived happily ever after...
