The US was the industrial base for the First and Second World wars. So while their only rivals, the European powers who had colonised the world, fought each other in expensive and unproductive wars, the US made a load of cash, built up an enormous industrial base, and kept local control over all these assets.
The wars did not really touch America- light casualties and no destruction of US assets- but they resulted in the developed world owing ENORMOUS debts to the US. Hence, after WW2 the British got rationing and the US got a car for every family.
