My teacher, Mrs. Sweeny, says that animals do not think.
I wish I could prove her wrong! (By the way she is not my science teacher) Does anyone know any websites or books where I could find something about this topic.
I beleive that some animals can think, but some can't.
I think that a jelllyfish mostly relies on instinct because it does not have a brain....But, an animal that is more complex...like a dog, bird, chimpanzee, dolphin, or reptile can.

i can't believe she said that. ask here what she thinks a gazelle is doing when it looks up and sees a passing clan of hyenas, or a cheetah in the grass stalking it? or why they vocally respond to the herd when a predator's near. elephants stop by the remains of their dead, and pause for moments. alligators and crocodiles protect their young from predation. i don't "think" she's thinking. be nice about it and go to my page and contact me by email and give it to her. id love to discuss this with her. this is the difference between instinct and learned behavior. and good for you for question a science question, which is how we have progressed in the field as far as we have. never be afraid to do this, but always respect the debate, and your counterpart.

They have to think. How do people's pets who save them from fires and coyotes do so without thinking? There's always a story somewhere about a dog or cat who woke up their owners because the house was on fire. Or what about dolphins. They have their own language and can speak to each other.

Maybe your teacher is just pissed because her childhood pet died and she feels abandoned and has to say wrong things.

all animals have a thought process. it may not be as complex as human brains, but how can lion stalk a deer if some thought does not process itself?!
what a very ignorant teacher! you should print off this page and show her others' views!
you go with your instincts and good luck putting upwith her!

I would say, yes, they can think. One reason is that some animals have to forage for food. How would they know what's good from what's bad? Also, how would they know who's prey and who's friend?

Also, some animals sort of make tools to obtain food and things like that.

Show your ignorant teacher the book, " Wild Minds ", by Mark Hauser. That will educate her out of her unbelievable ignorance.

Dogs learn to sit. And they can understand the difference in commands. Thats evidence that they can think.
