Religion is an extremely powerful force in society-so many emotions and beliefs are based on religious training. Unfortunately, religion is often misused by people to control the masses. Religion has been used to fuel hatred, war, genocide, as well as rape, witch hunts, torture, and murder. Religion has also been used to instill shame, powerlessness, guilt, fear, anger, and rage. Religion is still used to justify sexism, racism, homophobia, and religious intolerance.
Religion does not mix well with individuality; it's a way to tell millions what to believe, think, feel, act, and behave. How can one faith match the needs of millions? It doesn't. The millions are forced to follow the tenets of the religious system.
I see spirituality on the other hand, as an individuals private faith, without regard to a specific higher power or organization. From spirituality, I see an opportunity for developing compassion, good works, empathy, charity, and devotion towards others. I think forcing religious beliefs on people is ineffective; look how many people commit crimes every day, yet many have had religious training.

I guess it gives structure through the ages. It must give people in poverty some relief in their suffering. Maybe it curbs the rage that envelops in civilizations. It does urge all to give to the poor. Unfortunately, it seems that a great fortune has been amassed by centuries of control by the church--perhaps to the detriment of the poor. Maybe helps strengthen social order as opposed to rule by the ruthless. It seems to have been the background in creating freedoms--and democracies in the world. I do think that it has been behind the goal of rehabilitation as opposed to strictly punishment. It has taken centuries to strenghthen the goodness of man--it will probably take hundreds of centuries more until poverty, ruthlessness and contol over people will improve!

According to durkheim Society (thorough individuals) creates religion by defining certain phenomena sacred and others as profane. In other words, society defines religion and religion defines society. Religion defines society by defining what is right and wrong.
