I have a few big ones and heard that if you cut them at the soft part of the stalk, then just stick them in the ground, they'll grow. Is this true? I would really appreciate detailed instructions as I am very new at all of this. Thanks for your help!!!

you can take a cutting of a new shoot, soak the end in a cup of water, within a few weeks it will grow a root, when it does u can plant it in a pot to grow, when it has a larger root stick it outside n hey presto free plants, u can do this with pretty much every kind of flower plant and tree, i do it myself (go to garden centres n pinch a cutting!) lol saves a fortune!!

Mums are usually planted in mid to late summer for fall color. You should pinch off new shoots to encourage flowering. When it gets cold they will die and you can cut them down. If they are hardy mums they will come back the next year.
If you want them to grow fuller, pinch off new shoots that grow straight up until July and then let them go and they'll bloom again, probably in August.
