The first this is what kind of internet connection. Cable/DSL or dial-up. If it is dial-up whole different problem.
Assuming high speed cable/dsl.

You need to know if your provider requires a login in the the internet service.
You need to know if the ISP records the MAC address of your pc as part of the internet access.

At this point you should probably reset your router to factory defaults. This is done by pressing in the little recessed button on the back near the power and holding it for 10 seconds.

Power off/on the router the factory defaults will be loaded.

To best set up you router get a patch cord and plug directly into the router and your pc. Don't use the usb unless it is the only cable you have. Tip: go buy one if you don't have one.

Make sure that your pc networking is set up for DHCP get address automatically and DNS is set the same way.
The routers default network address is 192.168.0.1
Launch IE (web browser) and type this on the address bar.
Note: You do not need to be connected to the ISP at this point.

This should bring up a login screen that says WRT54G
Login using the default user and password.

If your ISP requires MAC address, username and password follow the menu choices and enter the information. Otherwise skip these steps.

Plug you ISP's modem into the back of the router. You should get connectivity right away.

Follow the menu prompts to set up the wireless while connected via the patch cable.
Make sure that the channel is the same one you are using remotely.
Tip: Don't set up the WEP security until you know that it is working. The wireless security is a whole topic by it's self.
This should get you going.

You point out which you connect your laptop directly to the modem, yet did you attempt to disconnect the relationship between your borther's laptop and the router. If the subject is long previous, then this is no longer the router. Did you verify the DHCP shopper checklist to be sure that somebody isn't applying your on the spot with out your information. verify the Outgoing Log to be sure how manyh websites are being accessed by way of the desktops on the router. in case you have Vista do you have countless products under your contraptions? that can use countless bandwidth, based upon the utility. became there the different replace made after those first few days? have you ever checked for different on the spot routers close to by way of with a severe sign capability and applying an identical channel as your router. that could reason interference and the errors could reason sluggish reaction.

One, do you have a modem?? If you do not have a modem that will allow you to have internet access, then you got the wrong product. You need a wireless adapter in order to get a connection. Second, did you install the router using the disc that it came with and in the order that it said? If not, get the disc and reinstall the router that way, following the instructions. As for your USB adapter, it would depend on the manufacturer and how far your router is to your adapter. Good luck! If you still have questions, e-mail me at steventan_12@yahoo.com.
