Can bettas and croaking gouramis live in the same tank? I have found very different answers to this online. Some say yes, some say sometimes, others say never. I know bettas can live in community tanks as long as there are not fin nipping fish, but I do not know how they fair with other gouramisI know that bettas are a gourami, and that some gouramis can not be kept together. I also know not to put two male bettas together. But I dont know if the male betta will be okay with my croaking gouramis.

Ok so earlier I asked if people thought that it would be safe to move my betta to my community tank... I did so carefully. I have some of the fish store bags, so i bagged him, acclimated him, and let all mu fish check him out. Then I released him. He has been so active since I moved him (though he was really active before when he was in the smaller tank). His color is good, but I am worried that he is stressed. I have fed him and he ate, but he has been going crazy! I am not sure if I should worry or not. He may just be getting used to the new environment, but then it may be to much for him... So do I just let him be over night? or move him back to the smaller tank?

The issue with betta, and gourami is they are all aggressive towards their fellows. Even shy ones like the dwarf gourami. As they are related they have similar behavior patterns with aggression. This can lead to fighting, and aggression. Also the larger kissing, paradise, and blue/3-spot gourami are aggressive in general.

With a shy gourami like the dwarf or croaking what you really need is space, and hiding places. They are both going to want to stake out a territory. If you insure there are enough hiding spots to go around, and keep 5-10 gallons per betta/gourami things should be fine.

Your male Betta should get along just fine. Of the Gourami I've had, only the dwarves have shown any type of agression but that was just towards another male dwarf and nothing serious. I'd feel your Betta wouldn't really bother the Gourami too much. Give it a chance and watch how they interact. If you start to see any type of territory aggression, you could always get a divider.

I have one of my Betta's in with two 7inch kissing gourmies and they get along just fine, they have been in the tank together for over a year now, no problems! Try it, that's the only way to find out! If there is a problem then remove the Betta to another tank!

Sometimes is probably the best answer. The key to success would be plenty of space and hiding places for the croaking gourami. Just a s sabresquirrel said, they need tons of space to feel safe and comfortable.

No, male bettas will nip almost any long and flowing fin. If it was a female betta, then yes, you could. If you want to give your male betta another companion, then a female betta or any type of barb would work best.

A single male or multiple females should be fine....no male in with the females either.

Make sure there are plants and hiding places and that the Betta is eating. Mine will eat from my fingers. They usually hate flake food. http://www.bettatalk.com/ good Betta info.
