First, you need to get x onto one side by itself, by adding 0.5 to both sides of the equation:

.25^x-0.5 (+0.5) =2 (+0.5)
.25^x = 2.5

Now you need to take the log(base .25) of both sides (log is the inverse of exponent)

x = log(base .25) 2.5 = -0.661

You can verify this by plugging into the original equation on your calculator:

.25^(-0.661) = 2.5

I am a mathematics professor at Harvard. This is a simple question that may be solved by simply typing this into a scientifical hp 17biipl Calculator which can be purchased for a miniscule price of $99.95 at your local calculator dealer. Glad to help!

0.25^x-0.5=2

add 0.5 to both sides

0.25^x- = 2.5

Take the logarithm of both sides

x log 0.25 = log 2.5

x = log 2.5 / log 0.25

x = - 0.66
