There are a hundred officially verifiable/researchable answers. As a top contributor, you have probably already found them (ya know... internet, and all), so I'm going to give you a whacked out theory that may just be pretty true, though I would hesitate to say totally.

As our government takes over more resource rich countries (I hear Haliburton is moving it's headquarters to Iraq, before their malfeasance investigation begins) we move closer to a global economy, and we must make up our deficiencies. Green issues is a big one, and many of Bush's policies are reflecting a rush to catch up.

Speak to me not of Kyoto protocols, I felt the same way, until I compared both plans.

Anyway... back to gas... Since American citizens pay half or less than half what any other citizen, anywhere in the world, pays for their gas, I wouldn't expect prices here to go anywhere else but up.

Lots of things... First of all, Bush isn't exactly making friends with our oil suppliers. Second, summer traffic from vacation means gas goes up, it does every year. Finally, the people that work for ExxonMobil and BP and all those other gas places have gone insane with their profits and just want more. And in the meantime, NASCAR drivers are just burning it all off going in circles. Not to say that their the only reason our fuel source is low. Back to the point; it's a combination of everything.

Because someone wants to get lots of money and doesn't care about the poor people that have to pay the price. When ever summer is here they raise the price and say that we have a shortage of gas. They always say that the rich get richer.
