It's not the guitar, it's the pick-ups. Strats usually have single coils - so you get that jangly, chimey sound. They have less output so you don't get as much distortion when you overdrive the amp. LPs have humbuckers, so you get a darker clean sound, put they have higher output so you can overdrive an amp easier.
You can get a "HSS" Strat that has two single coils and 1 humbucker - so it's more versitile. Other guitars have 2 humbuckers and a single coil in between. Others have a "coil tap" switch to try to make a humbucker sound like a single coil. The Pumkins sound is mostly humbucker, but there is single coil in there too. I like the HSS Strat, but try them out for yourself.
