A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ bulges through a weak area of muscle. Most hernias occur in the abdomen. There are several types of hernias, including
Inguinal, the most common type, is in the groin
Umbilical, around the belly button
Incisional, through a scar
Hiatal, a small opening in the diaphragm that allows the upper part of the stomach to move up into the chest.
Congenital diaphragmatic, a birth defect that needs surgery
Hernias are common. They can affect men, women and children. A combination of muscle weakness and straining, such as with heavy lifting, might contribute. Some people are born with weak abdominal muscles and may be more likely to get a hernia.
The usual treatment for a hernia is surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall. Untreated hernias can cause pain and health problems.

A hernia is an opening or weakness in the muscular structure of the wall of the abdomen. This defect causes a bulging of the abdominal wall. This bulging is usually more noticeable when the abdominal muscles are tightened, thereby increasing the pressure in the abdomen. Examples of activities that can worsen a hernia are lifting, coughing, or even straining to have a bowel movement. Imagine a barrel with a hole in its side and a balloon that is blown up inside the barrel. Part of the inflated balloon would bulge out through the hole. The balloon going through the hole is like the tissues of the abdomen bulging through a hernia.
Serious complications from a hernia result from the trapping of tissues in the hernia -- a process called incarceration. Trapped tissues may have their blood supply cut off, leading to damage or death of the tissue. The treatment of incarceration requires surgery.
What are the symptoms of a hernia?
Symptoms of a hernia include pain or discomfort and a localized swelling somewhere on the surface of the abdomen or in the groin area.

The absolute definition of a hernia is the protrusion of an organ or structure into surrounding tissues.
The common type that most people are thinking of when they imagine a hernia is an inguinal hernia. Here there is a weakness of the groin muscles, though which bowel protrudes, producing a groin swelling which may vary in size, depending on how much bowel is through the weakness.

Another common type is the hiatus or diaphragmatic hernia. Here the top of stomach pushes through the diaphragm. This causes the one way valve to fail and acid reflux occurs.

Other tissues such as muscle and even brain can produce hernias.

Quite basically, a hernia is when there is a protrusion of tissue or organ that bulges through a gap in muscle or containing membrane.
Most common types of hernias are in the stomach wall where the intestine will bulge through the muscle wall.

its spelt hernia there are a few types scrotal (the scrotal sac) and inguinal( the groin region) being the most common. in these regions are little holes where nerves and blood vessels travel from deep in your body to more superficial towards the skin. in some cases fat and soft tissue can pop out through these holes and can be seen as little soft squidgy balls that can be pushed readily back in. men are more prone to them as they have larger holes but sometimes woman can get them esp if they ride horses. weight lifting also causes them.. most of the time they need surgery to make the holes smaller
