I've seen many coffee shops and boutiques displaying paintings by local artists for sale, but now that I'm interested in buying I can't remember where to look!

There are bound to be several local art associations. You should be able to find these in the phone book, look under "Art Organizations." These groups will often have a schedule of exhibitions during the year where works will be for sale.
Contact the art departments of local colleges or high schools and tell them you are interested in original art. Sometimes they have exhibitions as well. (Students would be THRILLED to sell their work.)
Sometimes local frame shops will have local art on the walls, and it would be worth calling coffee shops, tea rooms, and restaurants in your neighborhood to see if they exhibit local work as well.
