He wasn't always an actor, he received his undergraduate degree in philosophy and political science from Memphis State University in 1964 and his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1967. Two years after law school, he was named an Assistant United States Attorney. In his first campaign for public office, Thompson was elected by the people of Tennessee in 1994 to the remaining two years of an unexpired Senate term. When he was returned for a full term in 1996, he received more votes than any previous candidate for any office in Tennessee history.

He's better prepared for presidency then Hillary and Obama put together.

Thompson was admitted to the State Bar of Tennessee in 1967 and worked as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1969 to 1972. He was the campaign manager for Republican U.S. Senator Howard Baker's successful re-election campaign in 1972, which led to a close personal friendship with Baker. He later served as co-chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee in its investigation of the Watergate scandal, (1973–1974).

He was responsible for Baker asking one of the questions that is said to have led directly to the downfall of President Richard Nixon—"What did the President know, and when did he know it?" Also, Thompson's voice has become immortalized in recordings of the Watergate proceedings, with him asking the key question, "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?"[7]

In 1977, Thompson took on a Tennessee Parole Board case that ultimately toppled Tennessee Governor Ray Blanton from power on charges of selling pardons.

Same reason why entertainers (Bono, George Clooney, etc) think they are Public Policy Analysts (or politician Al Gore thinking he is a scientist). Oh wait, I guess it's OK when LIBERAL entertainers do it. Oh and Fred Thompson has a law degree, Bono and Clooney are probably high school drop outs and they are telling us how to live.

For the same reason that lawyers and doctors think they are politicians. He was a Senator for 8 years so that is more experience then most of the Democrats running for President have.

It's not like they're going to really be doing anything other than implementing plans and programs prepared by the real people who run the government when Republicans are in charge - those running our Military-Industrial Complex.

Nixon and Ford were the last Republican Presidents who had a mind of their own and actually did (or attempted to in ford/s case) initiate actions from the White House - the Republican powers that be apparently didn't want any more 'independent' Nixons or Fords. Both Bushes were groomed for the Presidency from early on - seniors appointment to head the CIA was an early indication of that.

Fred Thompson was a lawyer in Washington long before he was an actor. He was a lawyer on the Watergate Comittee.

Remember, we had an actor in the white house and he just kept on acting and did it so well that a lot of folks thought he was one of the best. Never has so many people had so much wool pulled over thier eyes in such a short period of time. As far as Thompson goes, he is too old and worn out to be our President. He has some serious health problems.
