The public may not have known, but the news media certainly did. Jackie came of a generation and a class of women who chose not to know. I doubt that this was a topic of their conversation. She had her world and a lot of latitude and influence in that world. JFK had his world, and except in public, his wife wasn't part of that world.

She and her family knew about JFK's reputation as "The Senate's Gay Young Bachelor" before the marriage. The marriage had problems arising from John F. Kennedy's alleged affairs and his debilitating health issues, both of which were hidden from the public.
