Temperature measures how fast molecules are moving, but temperature is not the same as heat. Heat is a transfer of energy from one object/area to another. Substances are either solids, liquids, or gases depending on their temperature, ie how fast their molecules are moving.

Heat and the speed at which molecules are moving are a direct comparison. The faster the molecules, the hotter it is. The slower the molecules, the colder it is. And yes, it is the movement of molecules which causes heat, not the other way around. Molecules' speed causes heat and cool.

The movement of molecules in a solid, liquid or gas represents most of the energy contained (I will ignore the energy inherent in Fermi motion, for example).
The movement of energy from one body to another is heat. Heat is not energy, heat is movement of energy arising from temperature differences. if the two bodies in contact are at the same temperature, both would possess energy, but no heat would flow.
