I perform civil marriages as a living and the Catholic churches send the couple to me before they have the church wedding which doesnt make any sense because the priests are legal wedding officials as well.

As a catholic I got a civil marriage then I got
married in a Church. I did not get married in the
Church because of me being Catholic or because
the Priest says I have to go to make it legal in
the eyes of God. I went because I wanted and she
wanted to go. One can get God involved alone
without anyone telling someone what and how they
need to do something. Being a Christian, with my
religion Catholic, God will reward me for being a
Christian, not being a Catholic, and that is what
matters to me and my wife.

Marriage is sacramental, meaning it's origin is with God. Therefore, She only recognizes a sacramental marriage in the Church. Civil marriages are not sacramental, but contractual.
