you can store things in them, the tiny ones for pocket matches i use to make a particular christmas ornament, i make a tiny mouse head and a little flannel blanket and stick the mouse in with the blanket over him and put the lid about 3/4 of the way up, looks like sleeping mouse using the tiny match box for a bed.

Well i dont know if you can do this but im from South Africa and there is a shop called the fairy factory that sells fairy clothes and wands etc, anyways, they use small matchboxes for fairy dust which they sell.
They print out on pieces of paper the words fairy dust and a poem about fairies on it then cover the matchbox with it then they place glitter and a little plastic ring in the box and cover the whole thing in pink cellophane paper and thats it!!
Fairy dust and kids go nuts over it.

If you want to use polymer clay (or perhaps an air-dry clay instead), you might be interested in these small matchbox "dressers" and pendants:

If you want to see more examples of those things, as well as some other ideas for matchboxes and clay, check out this page at my site:

(click on Papier Mache, Cardboard, Paper in the list at the top of the page ... then scroll down a bit to the subcategory called Matchboxes....)
HTH, and have fun!

I did a web search for 'matchbox crafting ideas'. Several sites came up with different ideas. Check some of them out.

I saw in an old issue of paper crafts mag (i think) where some one took a bunch of the sliding matchboxes and made a little avent calendar of sorts.
you can cover them with printed paper and emblishments and use them to hold little things, tiny gift for some one, like money or earrings.
the link below isn't the exact one I saw, but it's an idea for ya!

If you mean small matchboxes.....Decorate them with ribbon, gliiter, bits of fabric, sequins, mirrors, buttons, gel or metallic pens, whatever you feel creative with and use them as pill boxes.
If you mean large matchboxes......decorate them with fabric, ribbons, bits of old jewelry, buttons, punch some holes in the lid and tightly line with fine netting. Fill with dried flowers or potpourri, and place in cabinates or drawers. the best part is that when they no longer smell youcan open them and refill them!

We used to paint them and glue them together for miniature furniture for our doll houses. My kids like to do this as well. We made all kinds of bureaus, dressers and even record players (this dates me...!) any kind of craft which uses the idea of miniature storage will be fun. We used brass brads for the handles on the drawers. In you're a crafty adult, these could be used to store earrings etc, and could be really cool if done well.
