My Corolla holds 3.7 qt according to the owners manual. I put in that much and now when I check the dipstick it shows high. It's about an inch above the full mark. Will this cause engine problems?

Your manual may have said or meant that 3.7 quarts is needed for the oil change, which includes the filter. Over filling may not damge it, but can cause leaks, increase oil use..at least until the level comes down, but can cause a drop in oil pressure as the oil is whipped into a foam and therefore cannot lubricate well. That is NOT good.

Take a small diameter plastic hose like from a fishtank air pump and run it down the tube where the dipstick goes in...when you feel it's all the way down, cut the top of the hose off about 6 or 7 inches above the dipstick tube and place your finger tightly on the top of the hose. Withdraw the hose slowly and you will see that there is some oil staying in the bottom of the hose. Pour this oil into a jar or container and repeat the process...it may take 10 or more tries to remove enough oil to lower the level to where it should be, so check the level every 5 or 6 times. Make sure you check the oil level with the car on level ground also. Overfilling, as stated in previous posts, can be very bad for running the engine.

As stated above, you can blow your seals and lose all that oil way quick. Worse, the crankshaft will whip around in there, which will cause drag on the engine AND whip the oil into a useless froth.
It's really easy to get down there and drain a quart off. Just make sure the engine is cold. You don't want to try closing that plug while hot oil is spewing out at you!

Puttng in too much engine oil some how will eventually affect the spark plugs, ether causng them to misfire or soak up oil, though ,m not sure what processes lead to this.

Have it drained to the appropriate level soon or you will be having oil leaks. You can end up blowing seals if not treated ASAP.

when you checked it,did you have it on a level surface?overfilling can make the oil foam, and you have a chance of blowing a oil seal or gasket.
