Has anyone crossed the continental divide in WY on either I-80 or Hwy. 30? How bad is it for going up and down. I am going to be driving a van pulling a trailer and am as nervous as hell but if someone says it's a piece of cake or gives me some good advice on how to make it one, I will relax...Thanks!!!

You will definitely run into mountains ,,,, Just make sure you have your brakes on the vehicle checked and or changed if needed ,,,,Driving in the mountain is nothing to worry about really but you do need to be rested and alert ,,,, Going down a mountain is a lower gear helps reduce break peddle usage a little too ,,,, You don't need to be afraid of the mountains but you do need to respect them ,,,,

Keep in mind your driving capabilities and what your limitations and parameters are and don't exceed them ,,,,If you are going to make a mistake then it's better to error on the side of caution ,,,,

It's not going to be bad really or like what you probably have in your mind ,,,, You'll see ,,,,

I can't stress it strong enough though that you make certain that the brake pads or shoes or both and the entire brake system on your vehicle are checked by a reputable mechanic and in good working order ,,,, Worry about that now and you won't have to worry about it them ,,,,

If this is your first trip then you are probably going to be tempted to look around or sight see ,,,, That's ok if you can look and drive both just don't exceed your parameters especially in the mountains ,,,, We don't want you driving off into the scenery you are looking at ,,,, lol

If you want to look around then slow down or even stop for a little bit ,,,, They have rest stops and some have fantastic views too ,,,,

You mentioned two different routes ,,,, I -80 or highway 30 ,,,, believe me I-80 is your best bet ,,,, There are things on 30 you'd have to negotiate that you wouldn't have to worry about on the interstate ,,,, Steeper grades and a narrower road being a couple of them ,,,, Besides it's easier and generally quicker for road side assitance to get to you if you have a break down or something like that on the interstate ,,,,

Getting over the mountains can be that piece of cake you mentioned if you consider my suggestions and just use good judgment and common sense ,,,, Just have the brake system checked on the vehicle before you attempt it ,,,, That's the major consideration ,,,, You'd be surprised at the amount of people that don't worry about brakes and wind in a jam ,,,,

Good luck ,,,, Yoda told you this ,,,,

Well, I drove across the country from N.Y. to CA. on I-80, and it was quite a climb to get to Buford Wyoming. I am not sure of that spelling, but you climb up 10,000 feet, then drop down into Laramie WY. I was so scared because I was loosing power climbing up the mountain, and all it took was a simple carb. adjustment, to get more air, then it was better. The view was so awesome going through WY. and Utah, that it was well worth it. As I got older I kept going west until I reached Hawaii, and I am where I am happy and warm. I love this place. Just remember you are going to deal with high altitude and thin air, so no worries, because once you get to Laramie WY., it is all downhill to Vegas.Good Luck, and have a nice ride............

No problem - I've done it with a '78 Ford pulling a U-Haul trailer on I-80 - a bit slow but do-able.

ive not been that way yet but youll be fine. too bad you wont get to enjoy the views though. there should be lots of pull offs where you can take a break and let traffic get around you.
good luck and have fun
