Have a Compaq Presario. Using Windows XP. Have tried Control Panel, then Settings,then resolution. The slider won't move!!!! Please help. All photos and pictures are completely distorted.

If you are using a flat panel LCD monitor, most of them only allow Windows to set the resolution to be set to the "native" resolution. Look up the "native" resolution for your monitor on the web - most 17" are 1024x768 and most 19" are 1280x1024. If your resolution is not set to the correct values for your monitor, you could look for the correct driver although this usually isn't required.

There may also be some other adjustment (frequency, scan rate, etc) that will affect picture quality - give them a try. If it is an LCD monitor there is usually an "auto calibrate" that usually works well.

One last thing, have you tried plugging an monitor to your computer to change the resolution?
