Luckily for me, I was brought up on a spectrum of music. From my dad I got a healthy dose of rock n roll, the good old stuff like AC/DC, Skynyrd, Led Zep, ZZ Top, Rush, Metallica, etc. For a long time my mom listened to nothing but country music, and thus so did I. I've blocked most of it from my memory, but back in the day I listened to a lot of Vince Gill, Reba, Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, etc. Then the early 90s brought grunge and alternative and I got turned on to acts such as The Toadies, Bush, Pearl Jam, and whatever else came on the local station (or even MTV, back in the days of actual music videos). I also caught the tail end of the New Wave movement; I'll never forget the feeling that New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" invoked in my blood as I lay in the dark trying to fall asleep.

As a teenager in the late 1940's to 50's the vogue was big band modern Jazz, following on from the swing bands.Stan Kenton was one of the favorites with tunes like 7 11 or blues in bolero. Other jazz greats of the time were Miles Davis, playing things like nights in Tunisia,or Dizzy gillespie.on trumpet. There was Oscar Petersen ,Duke Ellington and our favourite of the time George Shearing and his quintet.British bands at this time were Ted Heath, Vic Lewis for the big bands and the Johnny Dankworth seven with Cleo Laine.Another favourite was Stephan Grapelli with the Hot Club of France. It was smashing music. Far better than the silly songs and ballads of the time. They say the favourite music of your teens remains the favourite for the rest of your life. I find that true.

i was brought up with two musical influences....
my parents loved country-western like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, etc.
my older brothers (14 & 15 years older than me) listened to Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Cars, Elvis Costello, Black Sabbath, Cream, Queen, The Ramones, etc.
thanks to the eclectic mix, i now have an appreciation for just about any kind of music out there. i may not like every artist in any particular style, but i at least like something from each genre.

I was brought listening to classical music and jazz but listened to pop music on my own then I listened to my brother's Alice Cooper Records and discovered Black Sabbath and then i loved Metal and then I took a music class at college and got into blues and funk and then old school rap. i think your dad loves the rolling stones so much because listening to them reminds him of special times. The rolling stones are phenomenal and are blues - based and have stood the test of time.

I was raised on 70s and 80s country. And I loved it. Until middle school, when I discovered grunge. After high school I had a punk phase. Glad that's over - my liver is permanantly f**ked, all for the music. These days I listen to a little of everything, by my heart is still in 1994.

I like the music that my parents played to me as a child, but I don't really care much for what they are into nowadays.
But here are some artists that they brought me up on:
Sergio Mendes
Chuck Mangione
CCS (Alexis Korner's 70's band)
Mike Oldfield
Mike Batt
Earth Wind & Fire
Swingle Singers
At the same time, I loved the glam rock stuff that came out of England which both of them loathed.

I was brought up with some of the oldies....The eagles (Love 'em!) Jim reeves, (Hated him!) Kansas, (They're ok.) and a bunch of others. When I was younger I thought the only singer to even exist was christina aguilera. Pretty sad, huh? No, mostly my parents loved the really old ones, the ones you could sing along too and get all nostalgic.

My Mother listened to Classical Music and my Father listen to the early Rockers If you do the math, the obvious choice for me to choose as a favorite at the time was "The Electric Light Orchestra" because they blended both!
