I know he was played by two different actors but when the original trilogy was re released, did they re dub the new actors voice over the old or do they just sound alike?

Clive Revill did the Emperor's voice in Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back. We never actually see a person, just a hologram.

In Episode 6, Return of the Jedi, as well as Episodes 1, 2, and 3 Ian McDiarmid was the voice and persona of The Emperor.

...guess the first answerer should get their facts straight before posting a response...lol

He was played by the same actor in the original trilogy and the new series.

Ian McDermaid/Senator Palaptine/Emperor/Lord Sidious.

On a side note he does kind of look like the current Pope.

Just the same way Ben Kingsley kind of looks like Amaid Kharzi the President of Afghanistan.

The emperor didnt appear in the original trilogy until the empire strikes back, when he appeared in the empires strkes back it was a dif actor from which appeared in return of the jedi. The emperor in return of the Jedi, is the same one as whats in the recent trilogy. When they remade the originals it wasnt dubbed, it was a whole new scene with the emperor as i prev mentioned, hope this makes sense

Actually, in the movies where the emporer is a live person (including Return of the Jedi from the original trilogy), Ian McDiarmid plays him. The first movie (Star Wars) doesn't have the emporer in it -- and in The Empire Strikes Back, only the emporer's voice is heard...played by Clive Revill.

The Emperor in the Luke, Han, Leia trilogy was played by the same actor who played Chancellor Palpatine in the Anakin, Padme, Obi-Wan trilogy. Chancellor Palpatine became The Emperor in Episode III, just like Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader.
The actor's name is Ian McDarmid (I may have spelled his name wrong).

He wasn't played by 2 different actors. The same actor played him in all 4 movies that he appeared in.

Ian McDiarmid is the actor's name.

the actor had makeup to look older in jedi so when he came out in the 3 star wars prequels he was the right age for the senator/emperor I don't know the guys name but everyone else did

The same guy played him in both trilogies. He was quite young in the original trilogy and just had a ton of make up (obviously) so he was still able to do the new films (though I dunno why they bothered).

As a random sidetrack, have you noticed that the pope looks like the emperor? Damn scary!
