I had over $30,000 of things in storage and all were auctioned off for a less than $300 payment. Is that legal?

What does your contract say about the consequences of nonpayment?

I believe they have the right to auction off your stuff for non-payment, but once they have their payment, the remainder is due to the owner (ie. you). I would first talk to the storage place owners/managers to see if you can come to an agreement offline. If that does not come to any reasonable conclusion, consult with a lawyer, I believe you have a case. You may want to check your storage agreement first, though.

Very legal in CA. There are people making a living buying things in storage.

It all depends. You will need to read over your contract. Some state that if you are in noncompliance of your contract and not paying the monthly dues, after a certain period of time they will own your posessions that are in the storage.
