Babe Ruth, why? Because you can go to someone who never paid any attention to baseball and ask them to name a baseball player, and they will say Babe Ruth. Its the name everyone knows.

Love him or hate him...no doubt Babe Ruth. There have been a lot of players that have contributed a lot to the game but none have achieved the fame of Babe Ruth.
