well..punk was an invention of a british media hot shot. He invented the term; it caught on; some american bands (mostly garage rock, as it used to be called) started to call themselves punk too...and so a youth culture entirely made up by the media became mainstream. Some guys who were fooling themselves actually took it serious; and so it actually became a lifestyle. In the mid/late nineties, there was a revival. Punkrock reached back to those british media-hyped bands such as The Sex Pistols.
