According to Darwin's theory it would be because he had an environmental advantage over the two-nosed, 1,500 teeth slug. Survival of the fittest.

Wikipedia makes reference of four tentacles. Two are optical tentacles (light sensors), and the other two are for smelling. However it makes no mention of 3,000 teeth. Read the link below for details.

"Like snails, most slugs have two pairs of 'feelers' or tentacles on their head. The upper pair — optical tentacles — are light sensors; the lower pair provides the sense of smell."

These are new facts to me, but they are relatively easily explained.

Two (or more) noses are useful for working out where food is. Each nose will be able to measure the strength of the scent that it is detecting, so the slug will be able to decide which side it should turn to in order to get at the food.

The teeth of a slug are really rasps - rather like a wood-workers's rasp, or the little teeth on the surface of a file. The slug uses them to scrape its food from a suitable source - e.g. a lettuce leaf, or, more usually, Mum's favourite plant in the garden !!!

Look up radula in a good dictionary.. . . . and read some of this:

They have a specialized structure called a radula that has rows of teeth that point backwards, it works like a tongue and rasps away at food and serve as a conveyor belt carrying food particles towards the digestive tract.
