My period was almost a week late this month, which is VERY unusual for me. I had nausea pretty bad for about a week and 1/2 along with sore breast and nipples. Many friends and my sister were convinced I was pregnant. Yesterday my period showed up and came with a vengeance. It is the heaviest period I have ever had. I'm in the bathroom constantly taking care of it. I've passed a few clots (that’s what they look like anyway), which isn't all that common for me either. My symptoms also stopped almost immediately.
I don't get why my period would be late for one, with those symptoms and then to have this insanely heavy period. What do you guys think?? Just want some opinions.
Thanks.

Wow! I can't believe all the answers. Miscarriage came to mind but I didn't know if I was just being paranoid.
I just talked with my sister in between asking the question and typing this. I'm going to call my ob/gyn just to make sure everything is OK.
Thank you everyone so much for all your answers. I have no idea how to pick a best one. So many of them helped so much.
Thanks again!

Periods are weird things; if you've recently moved in to a new place, that can affect it, as, believe it or not, when a group of women live together, their periods synchronize.

So that could be one possible explanation for it being late. And then there's just .... it was late for no particular reason.

But if you think that you might have been pregnant, and it seems that is what you suspect, then you should definitely go to a doctor.

Did you know that 40% of first pregnancies end in miscarriage? I read that somewhere... so sorry, I can't cite a source for that.

There's also the fact that if it was a miscarriage, it's important that a doctor ensure that the entire fetus has been expelled from your uterus; if it hasn't, it can cause infection.

Better safe than sorry, so I'd say go to a doctor, tell the MD what's going on, including any incidents of unprotected sex, and let the doctor check you out.

I went through the same thing. My cycle was over a week late and then I started to have pinkish discharge and my cycle finally came on. When it came it was extremely heavy. I mean every hour or so I was changing my tampon. I've never had a cycle like that. I thought I was pregnant, but when my cycle started, I was like, "I can't be!!" I experience clots and some cramping. I had all the symptoms too. Morning sickness, sore nipples, tired, frequent urination, etc. The bleeding on lasted 2 1/2 days, so unlike my regular cycles which was 5 days long at the most. Shortly after the symptoms subsided. My boyfriend thought I was pregnant, but after 10 + negative pregnancy test, we realized, hey I may not be pregnant. I later read that when a woman experience a late cycle and it is extremely heavy, this could be a miscarriage and we mistake it as a heavy flow. Or it could be your body regulating (my boyfriends mom told me, she's a nurse). Since then, my cycles have been every 23 days without fail. I can chart them and they come without fail. My boyfriend and I believe that I had a miscarriage which is messed up, cause we want a child together. Were trying again so to speak (whatever happens, happens). But it would really be hard for a doctor to tell you if it was a miscarraige or not. But still, you may be pregnant. Just test to see what going on with you. Did you have any cramping or anything out the norm? But your situation sounds alot like mine (yeah, I know each female is different). But that was unusal for me also. I hope my insight has helped. And take care!!!

Usually a missed period is a sign of pregnancy however the nausea or "morning sickness" does not usually show up until you have actually been pregnant for one to two months. Clots in a period are not an unusual occurrence since you are shedding the lining of your uterus. It is possible that you could have been pregnant but the fetus would have been so little that you could pass it in your period. I am not being mean but there are ways to prevent pregnancy. If you don't want to practice abstinence then use contraception. The pill and the patch are the best options out there. The pill will ensure shorter periods and guaranteed on time periods. The pill and the patch are only as effective as the user. With perfect use and not forgetting your pill taking it at the same time everyday it is 99.8% effective in preventing pregnancy. Give it a try you can get it at your local health department and usually pretty cheap and without parental consent if you are underage.

I've had the same problem before but for me it wasn't a week or two. Once it was almost 2 months going into 3 without my period! It scared the heck out of me of course because I would normally get it every month. But, I came to find that the more I thought about the possibility of being pregnant and looking up info like symptoms, I realized later on that I was subconsiously giving myself pregnancy symptoms. I thought of it all the time, "Why are my breasts feeling different or firmer? Why am I getting head aches, back pains? I'm feeling pains as if they were cramps or worse but I didnt get my period.! Oh my god, I'm feeling way to sleepy, nausea, weak, and dizzy just by standing up. Shoot! I just ate an orange and i feel as though my body wants to throw it back up? What's going on with me? I came to realize later that well like the Beatles said, "It's all in the mind you know." The mind is something that many underestimate.
The more I thought of it, the more I became preocupied and very worried. If you think about and stress way too much, you can unwillingly trick yourself that you are when you're not. Menstrual cycles will change for us, some more than others. Many things can affect it: depression, body weight or over eating, and stress.

Its not unusual to have slightly late periods it sounds like you were stressing a lot over ur period showing up on time and stress will almost always cause your period to be late, heavy, and full of clots! Not only that but also if you have had any abnormal weight gain/loss or if your diet has changed. Its also possible that you were pregnant but had a very early miscarriage. In the future try not to stress as much, I find that being on the birth control pill relieves stress..mayb u should talk to your gyno about puting u on a type of contraceptive! Hope this helps!

honestly it sounds like you may have had a early miscarriage. The same thing happened to me and i was devastated (i had an ectopic), but i got pregnant less then 2 months later and now i have 2 boys 10 months apart. If you did have a miscarriage I'm so sorry, but you have to look at it in a different perspective, it helped me. Something may have been wrong with the baby, your body might not have been quit ready yet, there could be so many reasons why.. But after that it seemed like it was so easy for me to get pregnant. But i would go to the doctor just to be safe you may b having an ectopic. You need to see a doctor. Its when the baby gets stuck in your Fallopian tubes, it can be fatal. So please go see a doctor. What they will do is give you a D&C if they think it is.

you could have been under some stress, job issues, boyfriend issues, family issues, any thing that can cause a reaction from stress. Your other symptoms could also be from a stressor. This is just a way for our bodies to let us know some thing is wrong and we need to fix it. You could have also been nervous about the thought of becomming pregnant, which again will cause "false" symptoms. Maybe your hormones were a little off that month. It's really hard to say what was actually wrong. If you are on birth control pills that could also waive things a little bit if you were off a day or 2.

It sounds like you might have had a miscarriage, or your body is changing. Every couple years a woman's body goes through changes thus, giving you different periods. Mine used to be so light, and now the first two days are soooooo bad, I've considered taking birth control just to help it out. (And yes, clots come with a heavy period. It's just your body trying to slow down the bleeeding) However, large clots are common with miscarriage, as I've had 2, that neither required a DNC because I was only a few weeks.

That is caused by a hormone fluctuation. You may be starting to get serious PMS, or PMDD. When your hormone levels are way up right before you start your period, some women's breasts can get really tender and ache, and you can get nausiated, dizzy, can't concentrate, REALLY moody - there are a variety of symptoms. that exact thing happened to me when I first started getting bad PMS - and I used to be afraid of it too at first, I was buying pregnancy tests left and right, but now that is how I know my period is coming, my boobs tell me! It didn't start happening until a couple of years ago though. Mine was 3 weeks late the first time it happened to me though. But - there are a million things that can change your cycle every now and then, and that happens to everyone (even really regular people - I am one of them) eventually for various reasons, and it doesn't happen just once, it will happen again. We are constantly changing over our lives. It will surprise you again.
Anyway, typically breast tenderness does not happen in pregnancy until much later toward the end of the pregnancy because the hormone that causes it is also the one that causes your period to start, and that is suppressed during pregnancy. They grow - do they ever! - but typically dont hurt in the same dull stabbing way in pregnancy. Afterward is a different story though...
Enjoy your PMS!

It's nuthin unusual thinking that u mite be pregnant, seeing that u are never late. And then on top of it the sore breasts and the nausea, it all fits don't it? Well I thought so too but when ur period finally did come, boy did it come. It was just making up for that lost tyme or should I say that last period. No to worry but I'd be careful, your not saying if ur on anything? I was real regular when i finally got off my pill and it onl y took me less than 3months to get pregnant after gettinoff the pill and I was on it fathfully for 12 years or more.
