We're buying a house that has a standard gas furnace. It's older (70's) and will probably need to be replaced in the next few years. The house doesn't have central AC, but we would love to have it. When it comes time to replace the current furnace, can we easily replace it with a unit that is both a furnace and central AC unit?

I would replace them. I live in the midwest where it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. When my central air quit, the repairman recommended just getting a new unit and furnace as well. I suspected they just wanted my money, but after consulting with people who know about these things, I decided to replace the furnace and air conditioner. I have a two story house and it is not unusual to have $300 heating and cooling bills. The winter after the furnace replacement was cold, but my gas usage was literally half of what it was the winter before. The next summer, the same thing with my cooling costs, about $100 a month less. It will cost a lot to replace them, but it will save money in the long run. Of course call someone else for another opinion.

yes you can do it but it would just be cheaper to get a heater and ac that is not one unless you have space on your roof to put it that is the only place you can put it you will have to get an all new duct runs thru the house so you are looking at about 2300 for everything but depending on where you live the prices may very
have you ever drivin by on the freeway and seen the huge units on buildings? well if not take a look and that is what you are talking about and they cost way to much

Yes you can. It should fit in the same space, or maybe in a closet. But be sure and do your homework on the a/c person you hire. Get all the facts and quotes and get a list of references. And call at least 6 of them if not all of them. There are a lot of bandits out there.

no problem, you can have a heat/air unit installed by any qualified repair person. you should even be able to tie into the existing duct work.

No problem. At least you have time to search different brands and contractors before jumping in.

Mobile home dealers and suppliers sell them, and heat pumps work better today.
