Let's say I get a violation for an answer that I believe is unjustified. I reply to the notice asking for clarification, and the response, which is always the same, merely gives me links to the guidelines.
If I still believe I don't deserve the violation, what's the next step I can take?
How far can contesting a violation can I go?

You can go to Yahoo! Answers Violation Appeals Board (link below)
http://messages.answers.yahoo.com/answers/messagesview?bn=SEA-ViolationsNotice
This is also the furthest you can go in contesting a violation.

The above answer is correct.
You can also simply hit "reply" with your email server and that will do the same thing.
But you must write out why you are contesting the violation.
I have had several that were wrongly submitted, some I have actually regained my points for my answer...some I don't hear anything about at all.
Violations aren't actually read by any human being. They're automatically generated when someone presses the "report abuse" button.
Sucks...but that's how Yahoo! keeps their costs down...
That and the fact that they do not have any phone number for customer service whatsoever!! That way the don't have to field calls from angry customers...customers who don't pay for the Yahoo! service anyway.

It's Yahoo's ballgame. Yahoo wrote the guidelines and Yahoo interprets and administers them. You don't have any "rights." This is a private, commercial enterprise, not bound by any "bill of rights." There is no provision for appeal. You state your case and hope for the best. You're lucky you just got a violation notice instead of having your entire account deleted. Let it be and move on. It's not worth losing sleep over.

Hit the link just below the response to contest it. It should give you a link to email, and you have to write them. If you have a decent point (it also helps if you copy-paste the original email into the message) and tell them that you want your points to be restored, they will do it. THIS IS RARE. But, if you irritate them enough, they'll give you your points and you can go back to normal.
Sometimes, if you threaten to pull your service and switch to a different ISP, they seem to respond a bit faster...wink wink.

Aside from a minor blow to your ego, is it that important?
There are no prizes for getting the most points.
I have gotten a few violations - whether I felt I deserved them or not makes no difference. Get over it.

you don't.
as long as yahoo answers is free, they're going to keep their involvment to a minimum. i'm sure they log the complaints, but don't look at them and automatically delete some answers when they are reported. i never got a relpy to my inquiry for a relevant non offensive answer, so i just gave up

It won't do any good, you just get a pre-fab letter stating they'll investigate, but they never do. Move on and forget it.
There are reasons I no longer take this site seriously anymore.

why do you even want to bother taking it even further - if you are worried about your account getting deleted - i just respond to my notices - and nothing happens. besides i think its a bunch of computers checking email anyway because i told yahoo to bite me and nothing happened

Forget it. The YA Nazis don't care. You may as well be serving retraining orders against mosquitoes.
