I have win xp pro on my pc and win wx home edition on my laptop. Also, what if I want to use a ethernet cable to connect and transfer data, how do i go about doing that?

it depends, in theory that is how it works but the cable must be intended for that use, they sell usb cable for file transfer and it comes with a cd on how to do it, it is very easy. if this cable was home made, it wont work. a crossover ethernet cable is your best bet.

USB to USB wont wont, you need the 'network' version of USB cable,
or use a CAT5 crossover cable to link the two up

you can use it. hook them both up and go to the windows east transfer wizard. it will give you instructions. usb is lsowe rthen ethernet though. you will have to have a unshielded twisted pair for that. (utp) not your regular one.

you can...if you hook both of them to a router and then put them under the same workgroup....share out the HDD....now grab and pull....good luck.
