Because they don't respect themselves or other living beings. Sometimes I don't think they think about their pets as being living creatures which deserve respect and humane treatment. Sometimes I think they just lose their temper and act out on the closest thing to them, which unfortunately can be their pets. Sometimes people don't understand how to treat their pets properly, examples - leaving dogs tied up all day, not leaving water for pets who are outside in the heat, not having animals receive regular vet care. People who torture animals are on the path toward some very serious antisocial behavior and people could become their target at some point.

It is the feeling of empowerment! The fact that they can dominate a creature that is helpless to defend itself! These people are a danger to society because when the get tired of beating a animal they will move on to humans! It has been documented that a lot of serial killers and rapist tortured animals in their youth and it just progresses to humans when they got older!

I think they do because they can. Animals are, basically, helpless. They are trusting (if pets) of humans...making them easy prey. Often, when studying the childhood of a serial killer or sociopath, they typically find that they abused animals in their neighbourhood...

hrm.. I don't want to do too much of your work for you but I'll try to help you out a little.

think about what could have happened in someone's childhood to create the need for them to lash out on animals.

think about what lack of control over what emotions could cause this.

could a lack of education cause it?

could it be considered normal in the setting they were raised in? things like dog fighting?

there are some ideas for you to run with.
