i want to get a 15-20 gallon tank. All the ones i've seen are VERY expensive. i think the highest price i would want to pay for a tank would be 40-50 dollars. if i can't get a tank between 15-20 gallons with that money, then what size would i be able to get? I'm trying to deside what kind of fish i want, but i need to know what tank size i am getting first. thanks:)

Besides craigslist, try local listings for freecycle: http://www.freecycle.org/ - everything listed is free.

Also check if there are aquarium clubs in larger cities near you. The hold auctions to sell fish the members have bred and to sell equipment they aren't using anymore. And check the classified ads and yard sale ads in your newspaper.

You might look at your local wal mart, granted their aquariums are not the best in the world but the 10 gallon and the 29 gallon set ups work well enough and are rather cost efficient as you get most of what you need included (filter, air pump, heater). Most of the time area pet shops also offer premade packages like this though they cost around 10-50% more because of the equipment quality in many cases.

As said before a good place to look is at flea markets, and yard sales as most people almost give away tanks from 10 gallons to 30 gallons once they get tiered of the hobby. Also many times pet shops will have tanks they have purchased from persons which they will turn around and sell if you inquire, and often pretty cheap as usually they get business from the air pump, heater, thermometer, and other needed supplies.

Honestly I would say your best odds are on going with a 10 gallon tank, as lots of pet shops will sell a 10 gallon tank stand alone for between 10-15 dollars. Though the additional supplies to properly set it up will cost you extra. The cheapest over all solution would be to go with either wal-mart or pets mart's pre made 10 gallon starter kits.

you can get a 10 gallon at walmart for $29.95+ tax come with a filter you do have to buy a heater separate if your going to have fish that need a heater. But i would suggest going with the 29 gallon tank that wallmart has it comes with all you need to start a tropical fish tank heater and all its 99.00 + tax This is the cheapest place i found around my area. But i didn't go with the 29 gallon right away an a month later i went and brought the it. So i would suggest if you have a walmart to check there for a tank. Good luck

Petsmart also sells the kits, with everything except rocks, decor, and fish. I purchased a 10 gallon kit for 48 dollars. It also came with a heater. Great setup, and they have 15 and 20 gallon kits, as well. More than you want to spend, but well worth it. Unless you do find one used, you will unfortunately have to go over the amount you wanted.

However, if you just want to keep goldfish, which are cool water fish, the 10 gallon kit without the heater is only 29.95 at petsmart.

Good luck!

go to walmart just for the equipment though. they have the best prices you will find for new tanks period. dont buy your fish from there though, they do not take good care of them

my 5 gallon hex- 30 dollars
my 10 gallon community tank- 50 dollars
my 29 gallon cichlid tank 96 dollars

this setups they have come with everything you need except, gravel, food, plants and decorations, and fish.

just the tank? you can get a 20 gallon kit at walmart for about 80 dollars -- it includes filter, heater, lid with light, etc. a 29 gallon is around 100.

Join your local aquarium club. I always buy used. 55 gallon FW with stand, filters, all the trimmings cost me $75. That was about 5 years ago though. I've put about $300 now into a used 37 tall saltwater seahorse tank. Go to www.reefcentral.com and browse through their club forums. You'll find one close to you.

in case you belong to a warehouse paying for club (which contain Sam's or Costco) it relatively is particularly useful to learn them out. I belong to Costco, the sell tank tops in pkgs of three or 6, in distinctive hues for way decrease than $6 funds each and each. (i think of it includes approximately $2 a tank, yet i'm no longer a hundred% particular of that)

Check www.craigslist.com and choose your state and city and look for a used tank on there. Many people just throw them out and you can probably find one dirt-cheap on there. Or try yard sales and flea markets. Post an ad in your local paper. Just a few ideas...
