The original game had a field goal as valuable as a touchdown, and the forward pass came much later than the run game. The name has not been changed. Now, it would be a bit late to do so.
Aussie rules football is similar and has the same issues. Why did you not pick on them?

Well; actually, we do have a sport called handball.
You use your hand to hit a small rubber tennis ball sized ball against a wall and when it comes back and in play, the other player hits it.
It's kinda like tennis with half of the court being the wall.
As for why Americans call what we call football, football; try this website:

American football gets it's name because the game is started with a kick off, three points can be scored with a field goal, and an extra point can be earned after a touch down. All these require the use of a player's feet.

Handball is already a sport. I love American Football but I agree with you. Maybe we should call it Throwball or Runball cause that's really what's going on. It's kind of like war, you know strategy and all, so maybe Warball.

They, football (soccer), Rugby (also known as Rugby football) and football (American) all have the same origins.
You can read the history here:
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9108490/gridiron-football
(and please thank McGill University for altering the course of the game because I'd hate to think what the NFL would look like if one of the "soccer-style" codes became more popular.)

Are you kidding, ? Chane the name of football to handball? Think of all the merchandising that would be ruined.. From a buisness standpoint it would be ruined. It would be as dumb a move as the damn XFL. And we all remember how much of a success that idea became.

we've been calling it football for 140 years now, and we're not going to change the name of our favorite sport just because a bunch of soccer fans in europe and south america don't like it
