Elephant tusks are a rich source of ivory; very precious. It's not often that you get so much ivory in one place; in a whale, yes. But those elephant tusks. I think African poaching laws started because of poachers who killed elephants only for their tusks-hardly for their beauty!

Tusks are made of Ivory which is a difficult resource to find. Only a few animals in the world produce ivory and only a limited amount each year. Ivory is typically carved and used as decoration all over the world, selling for hundreds of dollars.
Tusks don't grow very much each year and a person in africa can live well for an entire year after killing one elephant.

Elephants tusks are composed of ivory, which is a very valuable substance, and is not easy to get. It is very inhumane to kill the elephant for it's tusk and it must be stopped!

They are made of ivory. Ivory is worth alot of money, and then to top this off, elephants are being killed for the tusks alone leaving their carcases to rot. When we kill the animals for their tusks alone we are killing off their race. The more rare an elephant becomes the more the ivory is worth. I had an old piano that in and of itself was worth nothing... but the keys were made of ivory and I got a few grand for the keys alone.

They are ivory, which is highly prized, and since you have to KILL the elephant to get them (or find a dead one -- not easy), and there are so FEW elephants, it just gets more valuable. Especially since it is now illegal.

Because Ivory is uncommon. Just as pearls, gold, silver, opals, etc. are uncommon.
