i had my computer completley wiped out and rebooted. i bought the computer originally, i think, with 60 gigs, if not more. when i had it rebooted it now shows it only has 9 gigs of memory but with my virus software and various programs i now only have a few megabytes left of memory, what do i do?? ive tried defragmenting and doing a disk cleanup. why wont it recognize more memory? thanks!

You "had it wiped out" meaning someone else did it for you? If that is the case, and your post is correct one of two things happened:

1) The person swapped your 60GB drive out with a 10GB drive.

2) The drive was not formatted correctly - which means it needs to be done all over again!

Hard drives are usually easy to access - there is a small plate covering them on the bottom, or sometimes on the front edge. Either way, it should net be too hard to find it.

Get a small screwdriver and remove the cover and see if you can determine what drive is actually in there. If you are not sure, simply Google the model number and you can get the specs for that drive.

If it was swapped out, bring it back and tear him/her a new one.

If it is a 60GB drive, and it now only has ~9GB of space on it (that's a 10GB formatted drive), bring it back and tear him/her a new one for formatting it incorrectly.

I have to point out that it is not memory (or RAM) that you are referring to but hard drive space. For there to be such a drastic difference either the original partition is still there but not useable or someone partitioned your drive incorrectly. Another possibility is that someone swapped drives on you which could happen if the other drive went bad and that one was lying around or if you got scammed. If it was legit you should have been told. Your next step is to find the paperwork showing the drive size then go back to whoever did the wiping with someone else that knows computers.

It may be that the partition for windows is only 9 gigs, and the other 51 are unallocated.
Right click My Computer and select Manage
There go to Disk Management and see how much space does your C drive has allocated or what other partitions does it has.

Im not saying you have to do this, but I only had about 4 gigs left on my 40 gig drive..When I re-installed windows,i deleted my drives and installed a brand new one over it,I forgot the name of the drive [something like fat32 or similar] when windows installed again,i had all my memory back....but try deleting unecessary programs, pictures, games, music etc. you'd be surprised how much memory these things take up.
