This is normal if you are just starting out. The ammonia is a food source for bacteria that need to grow in there. All part of the cycling process.

If this is an established tank and you are starting to get ammonia readings, then there could be a few things wrong:
1. You are overfeeding which leads to more waste that turns into bacteria.
2. You just added new fish and the bacteria already there can't handle the added waste and can't break it down fast enough.
3. Your tank was not cycled properly in the first place. Take all your livestock back to the fish store and try to reestablish your beneficial bacteria colonies.

I'm a little lost about your question here. Are you saying this tank has just shown traces of ammonia in your water, and this has been cycled through? Or are you going through your cycle now and the levels have not dropped off yet? What is the readings your getting on your ammonia, (1)what level, (2)what is the PH (3) what is the specific gravity in the tank (4) how old is the tank (5) what is the population in the tank. I think we need a little help here.

You can add an ammonia remover to the tank's filter. If you have Live rock it should equal itself out overtime. Stop adding things and be patient. You can also add cycle to help establish the bacteria to help break ammonia down.
